Uncover Edinburgh's History on a Walking Tour

Updated: Oct 24

Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland, is a city steeped in history. From its medieval Old Town to the elegant Georgian architecture of the New Town, every corner tells a story. Edinburgh's New Town is highly undervalued and visitors barely scratch the surface of this area of the city. Walking tours offer a unique way to explore this rich heritage. They allow you to connect with the past while enjoying the vibrant atmosphere of the city.

In this post, we will explore two areas of Edinburgh. We will highlight what makes each tour special and what you can expect to see. Whether you are a history buff or just looking for a fun way to spend your day, there is something for everyone.

The Charm of the Old Town

The Old Town is the heart of Edinburgh. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site filled with narrow alleys, cobbled streets, and historic buildings. Walking through this area feels like stepping back in time.

The Royal Mile is the heart of Edinburgh's Old Town. This tour takes you along the Royal Mile, which stretches from Edinburgh Castle to the Palace of Holyroodhouse. Along the way, you will see landmarks like St Giles' Cathedral and the Mercat Cross.

I have lived in Edinburgh for nearly thirty years and am knowledgeable and passionate about the city's history. I share fascinating stories about the people who lived here, from kings and queens, Edinburgh's 18th century enlightenment period, the city's dark history and important medical background. You will get the chance to learn and enjoy the significance of each site and how it shaped Edinburgh's development.

Discovering the New Town

While the Old Town is full of history, the New Town offers a different perspective. Built in the 18th and 19th centuries, it showcases stunning Georgian architecture. The streets are wider, and the layout is more organized compared to the Old Town.

The New Town as I say is a highly undervalued part of the city. It has the Georgian beauty but not the crowds of the Old Town. It is a fantastic area to explore. Visiting Charlotte Square and Scott monument is only scratching the surface. The Royal Botanic Gardens are an escape from the busyness of the city. Wandering around what are often quiet Georgian streets makes you think you are in another country from the Old Town.

The area is an art lovers paradise. As well as having three art galleries within a five minute walk the New Town has been used for a number of Bollywood films.
